Premier Inn Expansion Approved on Drighlington Green Belt Land Following Closure of Brickworks Family Venue
The expansion of the Drighlington Premier Inn has officially been given the green light, allowing development to move forward on land classed as green belt — a decision that continues to divide opinion across the village.
The approval comes following the closure and demolition of the former Brickworks site, which for many local families was far more than just a restaurant. The venue had become a well-known family destination within Drighlington, offering a restaurant, children’s play area and social meeting place that served the community for years.
Many residents have expressed disappointment that the family-focused venue was lost, with some questioning whether enough consideration was given to preserving facilities that benefited local families and children. The Brickworks had been particularly popular for birthday parties, weekend meals and gatherings for parents looking for safe indoor play facilities close to home.
Now, with the Premier Inn extension approved, the area is set to undergo another major transformation.
Supporters of the hotel expansion say the development will create jobs, attract more visitors to the area and support nearby businesses including pubs, cafés and local shops. Due to Drighlington’s location between Leeds and Bradford, the hotel is already seen as a convenient base for business travellers and visitors travelling across West Yorkshire.
However, others remain concerned about the increasing loss of green belt land and the continued expansion of commercial developments within the village. Traffic congestion, parking pressure and strain on local infrastructure have also been raised as concerns by residents discussing the plans.
The former Brickworks site represented a different side of village life — one centred around family entertainment and community gatherings — and for some locals, its closure marks the end of a recognisable part of modern Drighlington history.
As development work moves forward, debate is expected to continue over how Drighlington balances investment and growth while protecting the character and open spaces that many residents value.
Drighlington has seen significant change over recent years, with continued housing and commercial interest due to its strong transport connections and growing popularity as a commuter location between Leeds and Bradford.
